- San Diego, CA--September 1, 1991: Verbum Interactive 1.0 for Macintosh,
- a pioneering multimedia magazine published on CD-ROM shipped August 1.
- Verbum, Inc. is making the landmark 2-disc publication available to Apple
- Developers for $44.95 (a $5.00 discount off the retail price of $49.95).
- Denise Caruso, in the Seybold Digital Media Newsletter, said "The best overall
- feature of Verbum Interactive is its striking presentation of media-based
- information in a way that actually makes sense and utilizes the strong points
- of various media instead of being gratuitously whizzy. ...This is a title to
- own. VI is a a snapshot of the state of the art in interactive multimedia: it
- is a perfect example of how to enhance an already existing genre—in this case,
- magazines—with digital technology. VI's abundance of creativity and intelligent
- use of media excites the imagination..." VI runs on a Mac II with 5MB ram,
- 8-bit color on a 13" monitor, and is built with Macromind Director. It uses the
- entire panoply of Macintosh graphics and animation tools, as well as video,
- talking agents and digitized sound. The magazine is divided into Intro,
- Features, Columns, Gallery (a showcase of interactive and animated works),
- Demos (paid "ads" from companies such as Adobe Systems, Macromind, Paracomp,
- Strata, Letraset, including demo programs and files), Sourcebank (product
- database), and Verbumalia (info on Verbum products).
- GTE ImagiTrek produced the Verbum Roundtable, an interactive panel discussion
- with six multimedia industry leaders, which occupies the second VI CD-ROM disc.
- Users select a topic, then a question, then click on the image of a panelist.
- Jonathan Seybold of Seybold Seminars, Marc Cantor of Macromind, Shaun Deane of
- Apple, Tom Corddry of Microsoft, Robert Abel of Synapse Technologies, or Steve
- Arnold of Lucas Arts answers the question in a video clip.
- The Gallery section and features "New Media and the Macintosh in Advertising,"
- and "Interactive Marketing by Design" contain over 35 examples of pc-based
- animations and interactive programs by top producers.
- VI also contains "redbook audio" (standard CD) tracks synched to animations,
- and playable in a regular CD player, from artists such as Todd Rundgren, Graham
- Nash, D Cückoo and others.
- A Windows version of VI is under development. Verbum, Inc., publishers of
- the four-year-old quarterly Verbum journal of personal computer aesthetics,
- plans to begin quarterly publication of VI next year, according to Michael
- Gosney, publisher and president.
